Senior Pet Care

Wellness Care For Senior Dogs And Cats 8 Years Or Older

All of us at Mountain Empire Small Animal Hospital love your aging companion animals and want their senior years to be as healthy and happy as possible. The size and breed of your pet will have a lot to do with your pet’s life expectancy. In general all dogs and some cats are considered to be a senior pet by the age of eight (the “golden age”). Due to advancements in medical care, dogs and cats are living longer than they ever did before.

Just as the health care needs of humans change as we age, the same applies to our pets. When your dog and cat reaches the golden age, their aging process increases and more frequent veterinary exams are needed to help detect health issues early and to monitor any existing health conditions your pet may have developed during his or her lifetime.

As your pet reaches the golden years, there are a variety of health conditions and diseases that they can face, including weight and mobility changes; osteoarthritis; kidney, heart, and liver disease; tumors and cancers; organ failure, hormone disorders such as diabetes and thyroid imbalance; and many others. It is critical that we work together to devise the health plan that is best for your senior pet.

Our senior pet care includes bi-annual preventative exam. Depending upon the health and age of your pet, they may recommend chest x-rays, bloodwork, osteoarthritis exam or other tests so that your pet can receive the best care possible. If your pet is on chronic medications, the doctors recommend twice a year diagnostic screening.

Please call us today for a senior pet care exam if your dog or cat is 8 years or older.
